The surgeries are done at Portsmouth Regional Hospital by a team consisting of specially trained advanced laparoscopic surgeons: John P. Gens, MD, FACS, Kevin G. Looser, MD, FACS, and Cynthia Paciulli, MD, FACS, dieticians, physical therapists, and behavioral health experts, as well as representatives from other medical specialties. Bariatric Surgery Program AccreditationPortsmouth Regional Hospital has been designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the This designation indicates that this program has the required personnel, equipment, pathways and training to accommodate the specific needs of the bariatric patient. Designated bariatric surgery centers provide not only the hospital resources necessary for optimal care of morbidly obese patients, but also the support and resources that are necessary to address the entire spectrum of care and needs of the bariatric patients, from the pre-hospital phase through the postoperative care and treatment process. To receive this designation, the hospital facilities are inspected by a member of the Surgical Review Corporation to assure that the facility meets or exceeds requirements set forth by the ASMBS.
